Family Assembly Special
The K-2 class has been doing an excellent job in music! There are some VERY good singers in this group. Check out the song we have been practicing which we sang for the BCA October Family Assembly.

A little bit of hands on learning (Grade one/two)
Here is a peek into a couple sessions of the grade ones and twos classes (from the week of Oct. 11):
Here the grade twos were showing their ability to build and replicate repeating patterns with two attributes (colour and position) for our patterning unit in math:
Faith is showing her increasing pattern as well.
In language stations, Mikaila searched through the word tiles to make a meaningful sentence, while Lincoln was busy "writing" his spelling list using playdough.
Looking forward to having class bloggers help keep us up-to-date!

(Somehow the formatting tools are deleting the spaces I put in, and smushing all my comments together... Will have to figure that out next time - my apologies for the meantime.)
A few Pumpkin Patch Field Trip pics
Sorry this is so late, but here are a few pictures "from the field".
Here are a few more showing some of the other activities (somehow I missed getting pictures of feeding the goats, chasing roosters, exploring the corn maze - probably because I was too busy having fun!)
I know the moms who came along probably have better photos, but just wanted to get these up for the meantime.

Even Steven Odd Todd Math
I discovered this book in BCA's library and recognized the potential. On Friday the students listened with rapt attention to the story and then the students worked in pairs recognizing and listing "Odd Todd" and "Even Steven" numbers as I re-read the story. We will continue discovering even and odd patterns by making sets, drawing pictures, sorting the numbers in station activities, looking on hundreds charts, and so on... This was a great way to introduce a powerful and far reaching math concept.
Hope you have a great weekend and find ways explore the topic of odd and even numbers with your child at home!

Taking Art Outdoors
Welcome to our blog and my first attempt at a posting! (I'm actually cramming for tomorrow's test ;) )
Today we tried an outdoor activity that allowed us to realize that each artist's work is unique, and that while some art is permanent, other art is temporary (kind of like sandcastles). I was impressed with the creativity of this special group. Next time I hope to video the students explaining their work, but for now, we'll rely on my memory:
Kenzie designed a river, which she later adjusted to be a garden instead. A few students discovered that artworks can and do evolve.

Students hard at work on their artwork.
Zoe used his collection to make a crab.

Exhibit 3: A yellow grasshopper eating grass.
Charlotte carefully arranged the yellow leaves she'd collected to represent a bug!
Joelle used her collection of leaves, flowers, rocks, and seeds to depict the boat that she went on with Sarah to Victoria. (BC Ferries should be proud!)
Joy is artfully arranging her collection.
Faith proudly presenting her very colourful jungle. This picture does not do it justice.
Exhibit 8: House
Mikaila sharing her artwork.
Arielle's Portrait: "My Dad"
This portrait is complete with rock eyes, a pinecone nose, hair, body and legs. Arielle was the only student who attempted to represent a human. Delightful!
(unfortunately the close up was not oriented correctly for the blog... will have to work on that).
Look closely, there is a tent. This piece represents an Indian camp, and it embodied both visual and dramatic arts, with the piece evolving with the action of the camp. The highly engaged artist group included Ethan, Camden, and Lincoln.
The students also had a chance to enjoy each other's art before a playground break.
Thank you to our parent helpers for their assistance in supervision as we collected and made artwork.
Next up is getting my broom to clean the sidewalk!

A new year...
We are excited to have the ability to post what is happening in our K-2 class this year. Whether it be pictures, video, or text posts, we trust it will allow you to feel connected with your student and their experience here at BCA.
